In fact I thought of it as a great way to start “My Life: Act II”. Within a few shorts months of my arrival I would be celebrating my 40th year on this big blue ball that we call earth.

I assumed that once I was immersed in my new life in Spain, everything would magically fall into place. I was in for a rude awaking when I was faced with the cruel reality… the reality of trying to buy a pound of apples, some green ones, with the very American name of Granny Smith, to be exact.

I had lived in Madrid for almost two months before, finally, I felt brave enough to buy produce on my own. Unlike the massive supermarkets of the US, where you are allowed to select, and touch, your own fruits and vegetables from carefully stacked pyramids, proudly displayed under halogen spot lights, as if they were jewels at Cartier on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, the majority of the “supermercados” in Madrid are decidedly retro affairs, that have nothing to do with our modern American concept of personal freedom, which extends to shopping as a sacred right; no, these stores are refugees from an age when women had free time to wait in line and gossip whilst a “specially trained” person selected, weighed and bagged their produce.

A linguist because, no matter how much you practice, they will not understand a single word that you say. An anthropologist because if the “frutero” does not give out little slips of paper with numbers, you can count on the fact that the unruly mob of clucking, over 60 year-old women, are actually in line and they know who is next and you must observe their body language and the pitch of their voices, so that you can your place in the pecking order. Finally, only with the patience of a saint will you be able to survive the ordeal of your first attempt to buy a pound of apples.

I had carefully scripted the dialog and practiced it several times, I had spent two months observing the customs of the old women in the neighborhood supermarket, I had prayed to a collection of saints for patience – I was ready.

Based on my intensive anthropological study of the local housewives, I knew that the best time would be during “siesta” when all, but the hardcore shoppers, would be home washing the dishes after lunch while there husbands snore peacefully with the exterior blinds drawn in their darkened rooms.
So with my script in hand I left my flat and rounded the corner to buy myself some apples. I was nervous and I could feel my pulse racing. But had I not imagined all possible scenarios? There was no way that I would fail to bring home my prize. Once in the store, I approached the counter, I whispered “gracias” to my panoply of saints – this produce counter had a machine that spat out tickets with numbers; at least this time I would avoid the trauma of figuring out when I would be permitted to open my mouth and utter the magic words: “Querría…”

“Siguiente”, barked the corpulent man behind the counter. I looked up at the LED sign that was flashing 56 in large red numbers. “Siguiente”, boomed the gravelly voice once again. I blinked and looked at the sweaty piece of paper in my hand; through the smudged black print I could clearly see the number 56. “Me, Me, Me”, I screamed like a little school girl about to be picked to eat lunch at the cool kid’s table. ME? “¡Umm… Sí!”, I replied, this time in the most masculine voice I could muster.

“¿Qué?”, the man asked impatiently while the crowd of old women began to fidget. “Querría medio kilo de las….”, I stammered before he interrupted me with a stream of “sí sí sí sí”. In Spanish he said to me, “You want a half a kilo of apples. But what KIND of apples?”

“Querría medio kilo de las manzanas Gra….”, I again stammered before he barked.

I felt a thousand words of two languages mixing in the blender that was my head. It also appeared to me as if the old women were surrounding and planning to stampede and I was the one holding a large red cape.

“GRANNY SMITH”, I whimpered as I stared at the neatly printed sign with the letters clearly spelling out G-R-A-N-N-Y S-M-I-T-H. “¿Qué?” he had become as frustrated as I had. A shrunken women behind me with white hair and face so wrinkled it looked like a bulldog that had been washed and dried many times over, muttered something under her breath and the other women cackled in agreement. Meekly, I pointed to the sign sticking out of the pile of apples. “OH! You want the grrraahneee smeees!”

“¡OH! ¡Querrías los grranii smiis!”
